When I retired from normal football I thought I would not miss it – but I did. I went to the taster sessions for walking football, run by the GFA, and was hooked. When they ended I was asked if I wanted to assist in the running of what is now the GWFC. That was 2015 and I'm still here.

I was always an average footballer but had not considered playing football again after forty. I used to coach the minis at Sylvans and bumped into one of the other coaches from those days, who told me all about walking football. I came to a session in 2019, and have not looked back. It’s great exercise and nice to participate in a team sport again.

I played GFA football from youth leagues through to Priaulx league for many years and eventually stopped playing 5 a side in my forties. My longest standing football team mate started playing walking football and suggested I give it a try. It was a completely different game to what I had envisaged,  positional sense and technical skills are key elements as are sportsmanship and enjoyment. I never thought I would be able to continue playing into my 70’s!

Having played football at various different levels for over 50 years, upon reaching my 60th birthday my body was suggesting it might be time to stop. Fortunately, one of my friends had recently taken up walking football and suggested I give it a try as an alternative. This was several years ago now and was an excellent way to continue participating in a sport I love.

I was still playing Sunday League in my late 30's, but had  a knee injury that needed an operation and I thought that was it. However, many years later in 2019, coming up to retirement from work, a friend mentioned Walking Football and one Sunday morning, I was driving passed the KGV and it took me about 5 minutes of watching to realise it was for me. It is really good exercise and I have made many new friends.

I played competitive football in the UK until the age of 47. On moving to Guernsey in 2000 I achieved my FA Coaching badges. I joined Guernsey Walking Football in 2018 and enjoyed playing again. Two years ago, I started coaching at the Wednesday Well-Beings session. I am also a fully trained first aider.
